In Vietnam, Trinh et al. (2001) reported 40 species of rust fungi, followed by Kaneko et al. (2007) reporting additional 13 species. After these field surveys for rust fungi in Vietnam, however, few research works have been systematically conducted. Therefore, inventory data of rust fungi in Vietnam is unavailable, and plant disease occurrences caused by rust fungi and pathogenic species threatening crops are largely unknown in Vietnam. In this study, we aim to establish the inventory of rust fungi to clarify the biodiversity of rust fungi and rust disease occurrences in Vietnam. In our field surveys conducted in Ho Chi Minh City, Hanoi, Dak Lak, and Ninh Binh Provinces in 2022 and 2023, ca. one hundred specimens were collected. As a result, the following findings have been found in Vietnamese rust fungi: Maravalia-like fungi as a new species candidate [95% (1333/1406) identical with Puccorchidium polyalthiae JF263493 in the BLAST search using ITS2-partial LSU rDNA sequence], and as new to Vietnam, Ceroteliumfici on Ficus sp., Diabole cubensis on Mimosa pigra, Hemileia wrightiae on Wrightia sp., Maravalia crotalariae on Crotalaria sp., Masseeëlla capparis on Flueggea virosa, Leucotelium pruni-persicae on Prunus persica, Phakopsora jatrophicola on Jatropha curcus, Phakopsora tecta on Commelina communis, Prospodium appendiculatum on Tecoma stans, Uredo alocasiae on Alocasia macrorhiza, Uredo musae on Musa acuminata, Uromyces mucunae on Mucuna pruriens, and Uropyxis arisanensis on Zehneria indica. Moreover, Hapalophragmium setulosum on Milletia sp. was found. This is the second collection after 130 years that this species was first discovered in Vietnam.
